All in the name of progress and thanks to the Internet, we have got used to organising our holidays ourselves. How odd will it seem to go back to a travel agent to book our weekend breaks and summer holidays. According to the article “Will my insurance protect me when my tour operator goes under?” this may be necessary to avoid losing our money.

We need to ensure our holidays are protected by recognized organizations like ABTA and ATOL. The XL customers who booked their holidays through the tour operator service have been informed they should get all compensation due, while those who booked direct to the company’s airline may not. In addition, travel insurance should pay out in most cases (but not all, so we are informed). Those who booked with a credit card should be okay too (or VISA debit) which should be good news after all they have been through.

These are difficult times for the airlines and tour operators and we have been warned more of these companies too will grind to a halt before it is all over. Let us learn from other people’s lessons and start preventing this horrific situation from happening to us too one day.
