At about age 25 Karen Carpenter became obsessively self- conscious about her weight and image leading to her eating disorder that she eventually took her life. Along with depression and low self- esteem, a feeling of loss of control can lead many to anorexia. It may have contributed to Karen Carpenter Anorexia. Many believe that her mother was very controlling and favored Karen’s brother, Richard, over her. In addition, Richard had also exerted control over Karen during their musical career. When it came to major decisions in their career, Richard dictated the direction and style that they would take and present. Karen reportedly allowed him to take control without challenging him. Many believe that anorexia was the only way Karen knew to deal with her loss of control.
